Hidden Gems: 10 Things Locals Love in North Conway

March 20266 min read

Skip the tourist traps. Here's what the people who actually live here do on their days off.

After years of managing vacation rentals in the Mount Washington Valley, we've picked up a thing or two from our neighbors. The covered bridges and outlet shopping are great — but if you want to experience North Conway like a local, here's where to start.

1. Sunrise at Diana's Baths (Before the Crowds)

Yes, everyone knows Diana's Baths. But here's the local secret: go at sunrise. By 10am on a summer weekend, the parking lot is chaos. At 6:30am? You'll have the waterfalls almost to yourself, golden light filtering through the trees, and the kind of peace that reminds you why you came to the mountains in the first place.

Pro tip: Bring coffee in a thermos. Find a flat rock. Stay awhile.

2. The Back Side of Cathedral Ledge

Most visitors drive up Cathedral Ledge, snap a photo, and leave. Locals park at Echo Lake and hike the back trail instead — a moderate 1.5-mile climb with better views and a fraction of the crowds. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Maine.

3. Tuckerman Brewing Company

Forget the chain restaurants on the strip. Tuckerman Brewing is where locals actually hang out. The beer is excellent (try the Pale Ale), the vibe is unpretentious, and on summer evenings the outdoor area fills up with everyone from ski instructors to retired doctors. No food, but they encourage you to bring your own or order delivery.

Location: 66 Hobbs Street, Conway (not technically North Conway, but worth the 5-minute drive)

4. The Swimming Hole at Lower Falls

The Kancamagus Highway gets all the attention, but locals know the real swimming spot is Lower Falls on the Swift River — about 20 minutes from town. Crystal clear water, natural rock slides, and a fraction of the tourists you'll find at Sabbaday Falls. Pack a picnic. Spend the afternoon.

5. Flatbread Company on a Weeknight

Everyone recommends Flatbread for pizza (because it's genuinely great), but locals time it right. Weekend evenings? Hour-plus wait. Tuesday at 5:30pm? Walk right in. Same incredible wood-fired pizza, half the chaos.

6. The Rec Path for Golden Hour

The Whitaker Woods trails get all the hiking attention, but the paved Rec Path that runs through town is an underrated gem — especially at sunset. Rent bikes (or bring your own) and ride from Cranmore to Whitaker Woods. Flat, easy, beautiful, and zero crowds.

7. White Mountain Cider Company (Not Just for Cider)

Yes, the cider donuts are legendary (and you should absolutely get them). But locals also know that their breakfast sandwiches are quietly some of the best in town. Less famous than Peach's, but no line out the door.

8. Artist Falls in the Off-Season

This short, easy trail to a waterfall is perfect for families — and stunning in fall when the leaves are changing. But here's the real move: visit in late spring when snowmelt turns the falls into a roaring cascade. Most tourists haven't arrived yet. You might be the only ones there.

9. The Secret Menu at Chef's Bistro

Chef's Bistro is one of the best restaurants in town, but locals know to ask what's not on the menu. Chef Joe often has specials he doesn't print — seasonal dishes based on what's fresh that week. Just ask your server what Chef is excited about.

10. First Tracks at Cranmore (Or Anywhere, Really)

If you ski or snowboard, the local move is simple: be there when the lifts open. First tracks on fresh corduroy (or after a snowstorm) is a completely different experience than fighting crowds at noon. Most visitors sleep in. Locals don't.

The Real Secret

Here's the thing about North Conway: the "hidden gems" aren't really hidden. They're just... quieter. Less Instagrammed. The kind of places that don't need marketing because word of mouth does the work.

When you stay in the valley — really stay, not just pass through — you start to notice them. The coffee shop that's only busy before 8am. The trailhead that everyone drives past. The restaurant where the servers know your name by day three.

That's the North Conway we fell in love with. And it's the one we try to share with every guest.
